Task 2 Thriller Title Sequences

Shutter Island
The video starts of by showing typical thriller iconography, it shows a long shot of a narrow room with barred windows and a barred door at the end. This fades out into spiral stairs, the motion of the stairs spinning round makes you feel like you are in another confined space as they never seem to end. Again we are shown barred doors, this helps to add to the theme of entrapment and isolation. We are then shown a close up shot of someone removing a tile from the ground, this close up shot signifies that this is of importance. A tracking shot through what seem to be prison entrance gates also helps to set the scene. All of this within the first 30 seconds conforms to the typical thriller conventions.

The image of a gun suggests violence and possibly death which is a typical thriller narrative. This idea is emphasised by the close up shot of the gun signifying its importance. We are shown a small cell which has bars on the windows, doors and hanging chains, this reoccurrence of this theme of entrapment and isolation helps to develop the genre. A single match in the darkness shows more typical iconography as darkness links into shadows.

The use of an establishing shot helps to develop the thriller genre convention, as you can see there is an island surrounded by water, not only does this develop the genre but it also helps back up the strong running theme of entrapment and isolation as islands are often self sufficient and dont have much contact with other communities.

The non- diegetic sound has a very strong effect on this clip. The use of violins, drums and other instruments help to create a very strong sense of fear and builds suspense. The lighting through most of this clip is dark and shadowy with the exception of one scene which is outside, this makes you think that maybe there is a way out of this entrapped area. in the blackness in-between shots there is falling snow created by CGI. This means it was done on purpose, possibly to convey a time i.e winter.

The only people in this title sequence are dressed as police officers, this helps to support the idea of being trapped in a prison.

Skyfall
An establishing shot allows the audience to know the location of the scene. It also leaves you wondering what is going on as the character is pulled down by a giant hand. This then leads on to a point of view shot as the character is falling towards the sea bed. The use of CGI to create the motion of falling and being taken in by the sea bed is very effective.

The lighting is dark and there are many shadows, this is typical thriller iconography and conforms to the genres conventions. A close up shot of a target board and blood suggests a typical narrative of death. Falling weapons, created by CGI also convey a theme of violence and death. This is supported by a tracking shot through a graveyard of falling weapons. The shadows which are also created by GCI help to develop the thriller, shadows and darkness are typical icons in this genre.

This then leads on to a scene which leads you through a pool of blood, this again links into thriller narratives and develops the conventions especially as the blood seems to take the form of a face which leave you wondering what importance this has.. This continues for quite a while creating a sense of fear and leaving you with more questions such as who's blood is it? this is all created by CGI.

A long shot of a woman holding a gun, which leads into a extreme close up image down the guns barrel shows you the importance of this character and what she is holding, it makes you wonder about her character; she could possibly be a assassin, criminal, psycho or detective. As you go through the gun barrel you come out the other side into burning area, again created by CGI. The main character is shown burning but alive after being shot, this suggests a narrative of deception or a red herring. Alos the lryics of the song are saying 'fall' but the images are all rising up which sugests that this is the end and the character will rise.

The dragons are very random at this point in the movie but they wouldn't be there for no reason therefore they must bear some significance and at this stage they intrigue the audience. China believe that dragons are very special creatures with the abitlity to change its breath into either water or fire, expand and contract its body and also the power to transform and be invisible. Therefore they could be there to signify that the character is capable of much greater things than the average human. The sound track 'sky fall' was made especially for this film and helps to narrate the story. The flashes of random images at the end of the clip help to develop the genre and keep the audience intrigued.

Se7en
This title sequence is showing you a story that will help lead you into the rest of the film. We are shown images of children with wounds or crosses across their faces made by pen. This in its self is quite psychotic and conveys a narrative that the children could be being watched. This conforms to the thriller conventions.
We also see a close up shot of someones hand making what seems to be a book of plans, this is also shown around darkness and shadows which convey to the thriller conventions. We are shown the stages of the photographs being made and by doing this we see that they are of children, this adds to the typical psyco character theme along with the narrative of (the children) being watched and a possible theme of entrapment and isolation.
Superimposition is used to place numbers and other images over the main image, this helps to create a sense of uncertainty and abnormality. Close up shots of images such as pictures help to signify the importance of them.  There is non-diegetic and diegetic music which is all electrically made, this creates a sense of uncertainty as the music doesnt come from a natural source. Towards the end we can hear police sirens which indicates that this person could likely be a criminal.
